We live in challenging times, and life can feel overwhelming. Whether it’s personal struggles, tensions within the church, or the chaos happening in the world, the weight of it all can feel unbearable. The rise in homelessness, the struggles teens face, and the moral and social challenges around us can leave us feeling hopeless.
When things get rough, it’s tempting to give up. While it’s true that trusting God is the answer, that truth can feel distant in the middle of a
storm. When you’re in pain, overwhelmed, and broken-hearted, it’s hard to simply put a smile on your face and move forward.
But if you’re on the verge of giving up—whether on God, family, or even your own life—please pause for a moment and read.
Do You Really Want to Give Up? Don’t listen to your heart
The Heart Is Deceitful
The Bible reminds us in Jeremiah 17:9
“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”
Your feelings might be telling you to give up. You might feel numb to the things of God. But here’s the truth: your heart and emotions are not always reliable. They can lead you down a path of despair and hopelessness.
Instead of relying on fleeting feelings, turn to what is steadfast and sure—God’s Word. In the beginning, there was darkness, and God spoke light into existence. When God says something, He brings it to pass. If you have even the tiniest mustard seed of faith, use it to claim His promises.
God Is Near
In your brokenness, know that God is close. Psalm 34:18 tells us
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”
If you come to Him, He will not reject you. He promises to guide you and fill you with peace that surpasses understanding.
Some Practical Steps to Healing
God has provided us with tools to restore and maintain our mental health, even in the darkest times. Here are some practical steps:
1. Meditate on Truth: Philippians 4:8 encourages us to focus on “whatsoever things are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report.” Reflect on God’s goodness and His promises.
2. Confess and Forgive: If you are carrying guilt or anger, ask God for forgiveness. Release bitterness by forgiving those who have hurt you.
3. Spend Time in Nature: God’s creation is a soothing balm for the soul. A walk in the fresh air or a moment of stillness in a garden can renew your spirit.
4. Follow the Laws of Health: Take care of your body as God intended. Stay hydrated, eat wholesome foods, get enough rest, and engage in regular exercise. 3 John 1:2 reminds us, “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”
5. Journal Your Journey: Write down the things you need to let go of—the burdens and habits that weigh you down. Then make a list of what brings you peace in the Lord. When tempted to despair, revisit these lists. Journaling can help you process emotions and see God’s hand in your life over time.
Learn from Joseph
Joseph’s story in Genesis is a powerful example of perseverance. Betrayed by his brothers, sold into slavery, and wrongfully imprisoned, Joseph had every reason to give up. Yet he didn’t. He remained faithful to God, trusting Him even when circumstances seemed hopeless.
In the end, God elevated Joseph to a position of great honor and used him to save many lives. Joseph’s story reminds us that even when life seems unbearable, God is at work behind the scenes, orchestrating a greater purpose.
A Change of Mind and Heart
When you choose to trust God and follow His ways, He will transform your mind and heart. You will experience peace and clarity, even in the midst of trials. Romans 12:2 says,
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
When you feel tempted to give up, don’t listen to your heart. Instead, listen to the God who created you, loves you, and has a plan for your life. Keep praying, keep trusting, and keep pressing forward.
You are not alone, and your story is not over. Let God’s promises anchor your soul, and trust that He will lead you through the storm to a place of healing and peace.
Blessings in disguise
Your struggles may hold a hidden blessing, shaping you to develop remarkable talents—like the gift of kindness and a heart of compassion. The trials you endure today could be preparing you to understand and empathize with the struggles of others tomorrow.
As the Apostle Paul reminds us:
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)
Consider this profound thought from the book Christ’s Object Lessons:
“Those who possess large affections are under obligation to God to bestow them, not merely on their friends, but on all who need their help. Social advantages are talents, and are to be used for the benefit of all within reach of our influence. The love that gives kindness to only a few is not love, but selfishness. It will not in any way work for the good of souls or the glory of God. Those who thus leave their Master’s talents unimproved are even more guilty than are the ones for whom they feel such contempt. To them it will be said, Ye knew your Master’s will, but did it not.”
May your trials refine your character, expand your affections, and inspire you to use your talents to bless others. In doing so, not only you will be happier, but you also glorify God and reflect His love to the world.
You are not alone, ask for help
If you’re facing true depression, please know that you don’t have to face it alone. God sees your struggles, hears your cries, and invites you to come to Him. As the Psalmist writes:
“The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)
Start by asking God for help through prayer. Pour out your heart to Him, trusting in His unfailing love. He cares for you deeply and desires to bring you hope and healing.
In addition, reach out to a trusted friend, a family member, or someone from your church community. Let them walk with you through this difficult time. If needed, consider seeking help from a professional counselor who shares your faith in Jesus. A godly professional can provide valuable tools and guidance to help you navigate your struggles while keeping Christ at the center.
Remember, you don’t have to carry this burden alone. God’s promise stands:
Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)
There is hope, there is help, and there is healing. Take that first step today—reach out to God and to those who can support you. You are deeply loved and never forgotten.
This is truly encouraging! God is good
